Caring for Your Tires

No matter what time of year it is, you want to be sure that your tires are in good shape to get you from place to place. Worn-out tires are never safe, and replacing all four tires will usually cost you a good chunk of money. Luckily, Whitson Morgan is bringing you some tips on caring for your tires, including ways to make them last.

Check Your Tire Tread

It is super important to make sure your tires have plenty of tread. By doing so, you’ll avoid a potential accident due to compromised traction or handling. To check tire tread yourself, a great tip is to use a penny. Insert the penny into the tread groove. If you can see all of Abraham Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get new tires.

Avoid Road Hazards

You may think that occasionally hitting a pothole, rock, or other road obstacle is no big deal, but it can cause some serious damage to your tires. Even if you’re traveling at a slower speed, hitting a road obstacle can still affect your tires. While swerving to avoid the hazard isn’t always the safest or easiest option, slowing down as much as possible when going over an un-avoidable road obstacle is the best alternative for protecting your tires.

Do a Monthly Air Pressure Check

In cooler temperatures, your tires’ air pressure can get too low, and warmer temperatures can increase it. Incorrect pressure can make it more difficult to stop, heightens the chance of a blowout, makes your vehicle harder to handle, and can cause tire wear to happen much faster. Be extra cautious of air pressure as we head into the winter months, because the wrong tire pressure can influence traction. If your vehicle comes with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, you will usually see a warning light on the dashboard when the tire is low. Don’t hesitate to bring your vehicle into Whitson Morgan’s service center for a quick tire refill or if you have any questions about your tires.

Keep Up with Tire Rotations and Balances

The recommended time you go between a tire rotation seems to be all over the place when searched, but we recommend getting this done every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. However, this mostly depends on how often you’re driving your vehicle and the vehicle itself. Your owner’s manual will give you a more precise answer. Of course, if you see a dashboard warning light that indicates it’s time for a tire rotation or balance, take your vehicle in to get serviced.
